HOYA gray filter 55mm Variable Density II
This filter has a neutral density adjustable from ND3 (1.5 stops) to ND400 (8 stops).
The density can be easily adjusted by turning the front ring of the filter.
The filter is made of high-quality optical glass, and has a gray appearance.
It reduces the light intensity hitting the sensor or the film without affecting the color balance.
This allows slow shutter speeds to achieve smooth lines at waterfalls, rivers, fountains, clouds or moving vehicles, for example.
Larger apertures are also possible for less depth of field. As a result, the subject stands out from the background, which produces a better result for portraits, for example.
Finally, the neutral density filter can be useful for cameras without adjustable shutter speed to still take successful pictures in very bright environments (such as snowy landscapes or sunny sandy beaches) where overexposure would otherwise be unavoidable.
